In 2020, I enthusiastically began designing the physical edition of Citadel21 magazine. After discussing the project with Hodlonaut and Katya, I developed a visual style intended as the complete opposite of the original online zine. All of the writing and imagery came from its digital version, but for the printed magazine I chose a deliberately analog approach.

I began by arranging the articles and photographs roughly in InDesign. I then printed the pages on an inkjet printer and cut everything apart by hand — every paragraph, photograph and visual detail. I rearranged the individual pieces and glued them onto A4 sheets. The finished collages were scanned, digitally assembled and prepared for print.

The amount of manual work ultimately went far beyond what I had expected. The result, however, is a distinctive visual language in which the analog process remains visible on every page. I designed the first ten issues using this method before handing the magazine's graphic production over to others. Each copy was numbered by hand.
